Damaging winds, severe thunderstorms forecast

Severe thunderstorms and damaging winds are forecast for parts of KZN this (Monday) afternoon until later this evening.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 4 warning for thunderstorms and a yellow level 2 warning for strong winds.

“A surface ridging high and an upper trough is expected to result in widespread showers and thundershowers over the southern parts, otherwise scattered this afternoon.

“These thundershowers may become severe and may be mainly accompanied by heavy downpours but also with a possibility of hail and excessive lightning, leading to a low likelihood of significant impacts over parts of KZN, except in the north,” warned the SAWS.

Meanwhile, a passage of the cold front accompanied by a strong ridging high-pressure system is expected to result in strong southerly to south-westerly winds of up to 45kt in places over the interior and along the KZN coast today, as well as over the north coast and adjacent interior tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

Adverse weather conditions may result in:

Difficult driving conditions on roadsLocalised disruptions of small harbours and portsDifficulty in navigationSmall vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing in a localityDisruption to beachfront activitiesLarge amounts of small hail/large hail over an open area
