Assembly Members issue two-week ultimatum to President over undelivered motorbikes

The Coalition of Honourable Assembly Members representing all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies across the country has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over the protracted delay in the distribution of official motorbikes promised to them upon assuming office.

In a strongly worded petition addressed to the Jubilee House, the local representatives expressed deep frustration over what they described as an unreasonable, unexplained, and discriminatory delay in providing the logistics required to discharge their duties effectively.

According to the local lawmakers, the motorbikes were scheduled for delivery within their first year of taking office to enhance grassroots oversight, project monitoring, and regular engagement with local communities.

They noted with concern that nearly three years after taking office, the leadership of the local governance structures continues to rely on empty assurances while facing severe operational hurdles.

The coalition highlighted a glaring disparity in resource allocation, pointing out that Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives who assumed office much later have been equipped with brand-new official vehicles. In contrast, elected Assembly members are left to trek long distances or spend personal resources on transport to conduct state business within their electoral areas.

The members cautioned that the deliberate withholding of the motorbikes has crippled their mobility, reduced operational efficiency, and weakened their capacity to ensure local accountability while managing growing community expectations.

They have subsequently demanded a transparent, time-bound roadmap from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs detailing the delivery dates, alongside a direct presidential intervention to rectify the systemic inequity within fifteen working days.

The coalition warned that failure by the government to address their concerns within the given timeframe will result in a total nationwide boycott of all statutory sub-committee meetings, general assembly sittings, and official functions.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Rainbow Radio’s flagship news programme, Nyankonton Mu Nsem, the Presiding Member for the Sekyere South District, Honourable Peprah Hayford, lamented that Assembly members have been treated unfairly despite forming the legislative core of local governance.

Honourable Peprah Hayford explained that the previous New Patriotic Party administration failed to resolve the logistics deficit, while the current government informed them that the expenditure was omitted from the 2025 budget and promised redress in 2026.

He emphasised that members across the country remain firm in their resolve to halt all official engagements if the two-week deadline elapses without concrete action.

”We have been treated with total unfairness and disrespect. The previous NPP administration ignored our plight entirely, and now the current government tells us that our motorbikes were omitted from the 2025 budget, promising to deal with it in 2026. We cannot continue to walk or spend our own resources to perform official state duties while MMDCEs drive brand-new vehicles,” Honourable Peprah Hayford stated.

”We are giving the government a strict two-week ultimatum to handle this matter and provide a clear, transparent timeline for the distribution. If our demands are ignored after these 15 working days, we will have no choice but to take drastic action and completely boycott all assembly sittings, committee meetings, and official functions nationwide,” he added.
