Ashaiman Squatters Allege Police Harassment, Extortion After Fitter Lane Operation
byEbenezer MaduguOctober 19, 20261 Some squatters at Fitter Lane in Ashaiman have accused police personnel of harassment and extortion following a weekend operation to demolish structures suspected of harbouring criminals.
The operation, carried out by the Ashaiman District Police Command under the directive of the Municipal Security Council, targeted suspected criminal hideouts and drug-peddling spots.
Several wooden structures were pulled down and burnt, while some suspects were arrested.
The Ashaiman District Police Commander, DSP Orlando Joseph Adzokpa, described the exercise as necessary to remove suspected criminals and drug peddlers from the area and improve security.
However, some affected squatters say the operation risks punishing innocent people who depend on scrap dealing and other informal businesses for their livelihoods.

They acknowledged that some people in the area may be involved in criminal activities but insisted that many others were law-abiding workers.
The squatters further alleged that some police personnel had repeatedly harassed them and attempted to implicate them in criminal activities. They also accused some officers of extortion, although the claims have not been independently verified.
The police command says it is yet to verify the allegations and has indicated that investigations will be conducted to establish the facts.
It has, however, maintained that efforts to rid Fitter Lane of criminal activities and other social vices will continue.
