Why Your Phone Will Soon Show Names Of Unknown Callers Without Any App From Nov 1
Your phone may soon show the names of unknown callers without the need to install any extra app. From November 1, 2026, Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL users will be able to see the caller’s name along with their mobile number when they receive a call. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom operators to introduce this feature to help people identify unknown callers to deal with the growing number of phone scams in India.
The government wants to make it easier for people to identify callers without depending only on third-party apps.
This will help users identify who is calling, even when the number is not saved in their contacts.
According to the DoT circular, the service will be introduced across service areas for wireless networks using 4G and newer technologies, including 5G. The rollout for 2G and 3G networks and landline connections will be considered separately.
How Will The New Caller Name Feature Work?
For incoming international calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts, the phone screen will display ‘International Call’.
However, the name must be a registered trademark or a trade name registered on the GST portal, and it must be verified by the telecom operator.
The new rules also protect users’ privacy. The names of people who have activated the CLIR service to hide their caller ID will not be displayed. As per the advisory, telecom operators must also ensure that the system does not store the caller’s name after the call ends.
It is important to note that the new system may help people identify unknown callers more easily before answering their phones. However, it does not mean that spam calls or online fraud will stop completely.
