Whistleblower Calls for Probe into Alleged Corruption at Ministry of Water and Environment
A whistleblower has called for a thorough investigation into alleged corruption and mismanagement of public funds at the Ministry of Water and Environment, raising concerns over suspected ghost projects and accountability in the implementation of government-funded programmes.
In a three-page letter to the media, the whistleblower, identified as Mawa, alleges that millions of shillings may have been spent on projects whose implementation and accountability remain unclear.
Mawa cited concerns surrounding the Solar-Powered Water Supply and Irrigation Project, where officials from the Ministry of Water and Environment reportedly faced questions from Parliamentâs Natural Resources Committee after failing to adequately explain why the number of sites under Phase One of the project had been reduced from 920 to 687.
The reduction of the planned project sites has raised questions about the reasons behind the change, the management of the project and the accountability mechanisms in place to ensure that public funds are used for their intended purposes.
According to Mawa, the matter is only one of several concerns that warrant further scrutiny. He alleges that some ministry engineers may be using government resources to undertake private projects, claims that have not been independently verified and require investigation.
Mawa has urged the government and development partners to reconsider releasing additional funds to the ministry until concerns surrounding accountability, project implementation and alleged ghost water projects are addressed.
Visit UHRC Sponsored He argues that strengthening oversight and ensuring transparency in the use of public resources are necessary to restore confidence in the ministryâs programmes and ensure that intended beneficiaries receive the services promised.
The Ankole Times made seven attempts to obtain a comment from the Ministry of Water and Environmentâs Permanent Secretary, Alfred Okidi Okoth, but the calls went unanswered by the time of publication.
The allegations remain unverified, and an independent investigation would be necessary to establish whether any wrongdoing occurred and determine the circumstances surrounding the reported project changes and other concerns raised by the whistleblower.
