Today’s Headlines:Tinubu must answer for his record–Atiku;Trump drops plan to livestream US soldier’s execution
The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has said President Bola Tinubu cannot rely on political allies and defectors to defend his administration’s record ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku said Tinubu must personally account to Nigerians for the economic hardship they have experienced over the past three and a half years before seeking another four-year term.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku accused the President of depending on political supporters to promote his re-election bid instead of addressing concerns about the economy.
“Ultimately, Nigerians will judge the President by what they experience in their daily lives, not by the promises made by politicians campaigning for his re-election,” Atiku said.
United States President Donald Trump has ruled out livestreaming the scheduled execution of former US Army Major, Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people in a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
Trump announced the decision in a post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, saying Hasan would still be executed by firing squad as scheduled on December 3, 2026.
The US President had earlier suggested that broadcasting the execution could deter terrorism, but said he had decided against it after considering the views of people who opposed showing the killing publicly.
“I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well-meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device.
Unknown thugs have reportedly attacked the secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The attack, which was reported on Wednesday, comes barely one week after NDC supporters were attacked in Enugu, resulting in the death of one person.
At the time of filing this report, no casualties had been reported in the Edo attack, but footage of the incident showed that properties at the secretariat were damaged.
It was gathered that the incident marks the latest in a series of violent disruptions targeting opposition political infrastructure across the state.
Senator Abdul Ningi has recounted how his colleague, Bello Mandiya, reportedly died after slipping in his bathroom and hitting his head, with his body discovered about 72 hours later in his Abuja residence.
Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central Senatorial District, said neighbours discovered Mandiya’s lifeless body after a foul smell began emanating from his apartment and residents became concerned about his prolonged absence.
Speaking during a Senate plenary session, Ningi said he was in Saudi Arabia when he received a telephone call from his son informing him of Mandiya’s death.
He said his son was among those who discovered the former lawmaker’s body on Monday, September 7, 2026.
