Ruto Confirms Attendance at Raila Memorial Amid Questions Over Uhuru’s Role.

President William Ruto is expected to attend the first anniversary of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death in Bondo, Siaya County, amid uncertainty over the role of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta at the event.

The development follows reports that Uhuru had been invited as the chief guest for the memorial scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026. However, Ruto’s decision to attend has raised questions about the official roles of the two leaders during the ceremony.

According to reports, some members of the Odinga family had anticipated that Ruto would not attend the anniversary after he presided over the handover and dedication of Raila’s mausoleum on October 7.

Uhuru was reportedly invited to play a leading role in the commemoration. His attendance, however, remained unconfirmed as preparations continued.

The situation presents a protocol challenge for organisers, given that the President is the country’s Head of State. His presence could affect the programme and the position assigned to his predecessor.

The two leaders have recently exchanged criticism over the country’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election. Ruto has accused Uhuru of supporting efforts to undermine his administration, while the former President has criticised the current government and urged voters in the Mt Kenya region to reconsider their political choices.

The memorial is expected to bring together leaders from different political camps to honour Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic development.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and other opposition figures are also expected to attend. Their presence could bring together leaders who hold different views on the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and its relationship with the government.

Members of the Odinga family have urged guests to avoid political confrontations and focus on celebrating Raila’s life and legacy.

The main ceremony is scheduled to take place at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, where political leaders, family members and supporters will gather to remember the former Prime Minister.

The organisers face the challenge of ensuring that the event remains focused on remembrance despite the political differences among some of the expected guests.
