Real Madrid Open Talks to Sign Arsenal Star in January
According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday October 15, 2026, Real Madrid have reportedly begun discussions over a potential January move for Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi, with Jose Mourinho identifying the Spaniard as his preferred option to strengthen the club’s midfield.
The 27-year-old has struggled for regular playing time at Arsenal, increasing speculation that he could leave the Emirates Stadium during the winter transfer window.
Journalist Joaquin Maroto described Zubimendi as the only realistic midfield target available to Real Madrid at present. His comments were reported by Defensa Central amid the Spanish giants’ search for reinforcements.
“Zubimendi is the only midfield signing that fits Real Madrid right now because Adam Wharton can’t come,” Maroto said. He added that Mourinho had already started discussing the potential signing within the club.
Zubimendi joined Arsenal last summer for approximately €70 million following years of interest in his services. Although he initially played regularly, competition for places has reduced his involvement in recent weeks.
Myles Lewis-Skelly and summer signing Bruno Guimaraes have reportedly moved ahead of him in the midfield pecking order. The Spaniard was an unused substitute during Arsenal’s weekend fixture against Leeds United before suffering an injury during a post-match training session.
Real Madrid’s interest in Zubimendi dates back to last year, when Xabi Alonso wanted to bring him to the Spanish capital. However, the midfielder ultimately chose to join Arsenal.
The need for midfield reinforcement remains a concern for Madrid, particularly after Rodri opted to join Barcelona. Mourinho reportedly wants additional quality in the department as the club attempts to end its trophy drought.
Zubimendi has admitted that regularly sitting on the bench is not ideal for his development with club and country. Meanwhile, journalist Dani Garrido has urged Madrid to investigate the possibility of signing him.
Arsenal would be reluctant to lose an important squad member midway through the season. However, Madrid’s reported interest and Zubimendi’s reduced playing time could make January a significant period in his future.
