Parvinder Jhota Murder: Mansa SHO Beant Kaur Suspended; Action Against DSP Under Consideration
Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Chaudhary has suspended Inspector Beant Kaur, Station House Officer (SHO) of Police Station City-2, in the aftermath of the daylight murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota on October 13.
Jhota was shot dead in a busy market in Mansa, allegedly by medical store owner Ashwani Kumar, triggering widespread public outrage and demands for accountability.
The suspension comes after Jhota’s family, particularly his father Bhim Singh, levelled serious allegations against a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Harjinder Singh Gill and the SHO, demanding departmental action against both officers.
It was alleged that the SHO had been threatening Parvinder Singh Jhota and his father Bhim Singh.
It has also been learnt that the Police Department is considering action against the DSP. However, no formal decision regarding the officer has been confirmed so far.
Meanwhile, a Punjab-wide bandh is being observed on Thursday, October 15, on the call of Bhim Singh and a 21-member committee constituted to pursue justice in the murder case.
Several political parties, farmer organisations and other groups have extended support to the shutdown, reflecting the anger generated by the killing.
The accused, Ashwani Kumar, has already been arrested. However, his arrest has failed to quell public outrage over the murder of the anti-drug activist.
The suspension of the SHO marks a significant departmental development amid mounting pressure on the police administration over the case.
