James Bond: Denis Villeneuve Explains Why 007 Was a Perfect Choice for Him After Dune 3

Denis Villeneuve opens up about helming the next James Bond film after concluding his Dune trilogy. The filmmaker explained what drew him to the highly anticipated project.

In his recent cover story for Empire, Villeneuve reflected on adapting Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah for Dune: Part Three. “I said, ‘Maybe it’s a good idea to go back to this project, not out of nostalgia, not because I miss it, but the opposite, I’m tired of it,’” he said of his Dune trilogy. “I want to make sure that I will be severe with the material. That I will not be complacent.”

Spilling more on his next 007 project, Villeneuve added, “I thought, ‘When it’s done, I need a very powerful rocket to pull me away from Arrakis.’ When I was asked to do the next Bond, I said, ‘Okay, this is what I need.’”

Denis Villeneuve was tapped to direct the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios in June last year. The Dune director will also serve as the executive producer alongside his creative partner and wife Tanya Lapointe. Meanwhile, Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce.

While the filmmaking crew has been confirmed, the hunt for the next 007 is still not over. Amid numerous casting rumors, Apple TV’s Slow Horses star Jack Lowden’s name has come up the most. However, there has been no official confirmation yet.

Talking about directing the new James Bond film, Villeneuve said, “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.”

The filmmaker added, per The Hollywood Reporter, “This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”

With Dune: Part Three scheduled for a December 18, 2026, theatrical release, production on the James Bond project is expected to kick off in 2027.
