His opponent outsmarted him — Kompany on Olise’s red card

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has defended Michael Olise following the winger’s dismissal in the club’s 3-3 draw against Norwegian side Viking FK in the UEFA Champions League.

Olise was sent off after receiving two yellow cards during the encounter, leaving Bayern with 10 men at a crucial stage of the match.

Reacting to the incident, Kompany said the French international understood his mistake and regretted his actions, which left his teammates to finish the game with a numerical disadvantage.

“He knows he made a mistake. He’s sorry about what happened and regrets letting the team down,” Kompany said.

The Belgian coach added that he had no intention of being overly critical of the winger, stressing that mistakes were part of football and should serve as learning experiences.

“It’s absolutely fine. These things happen,” he added.

However, Kompany revealed that he had told Olise his opponent had outsmarted him, suggesting the winger needed to exercise better judgement in emotionally charged situations.

The dismissal proved significant in a dramatic contest in which Bayern recovered from a two-goal deficit to take a 3-2 lead before Viking scored a late equaliser to secure a draw.

Harry Kane played a key role in Bayern’s comeback, but the German champions were unable to hold on for victory.
