Ghana Railway Development Authority Promises Competitive Container Haulage Rates from Tema Port

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has pledged to offer logistics companies the most affordable container haulage charges for transporting goods from Tema Port. Dr. Frederick Appoh, the Chief Executive Officer of the authority, made this commitment during a recent engagement with stakeholders in the logistics and transport sector.

According to Dr. Appoh, the authority is determined to provide cost-effective rail haulage services that will significantly reduce the financial burden on logistics firms currently relying on road transportation. He emphasized that moving containers by rail from Tema Port to various destinations across the country would be far cheaper than the existing road-based alternatives, which are often affected by fuel costs, traffic congestion, and vehicle maintenance expenses.

The CEO explained that the railway system, once fully operational and modernized, would offer a reliable and efficient means of transporting containers inland. This, he noted, would not only lower operational costs for logistics companies but also ease pressure on the country’s road networks, which frequently suffer damage from heavy truck traffic.

Dr. Appoh further stated that the authority is working tirelessly to improve rail infrastructure and ensure timely delivery of services. He assured logistics operators that the GRDA is committed to transparency, efficiency, and competitive pricing, adding that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to position Ghana as a leading trade and transit hub in West Africa.

Stakeholders in the logistics industry have welcomed the assurance, noting that affordable container haulage could boost trade volumes and improve Ghana’s competitiveness in the sub-region. Many expressed optimism that the railway option would reduce delays and lower the overall cost of doing business at the port.

The GRDA boss reiterated that the authority remains open to collaboration with private sector players to enhance service delivery. He urged logistics firms to take advantage of the anticipated cheaper rates once the rail haulage system becomes fully operational, promising that the authority would continue to prioritize customer satisfaction and national economic growth.

The assurance from Dr. Appoh signals a renewed commitment by the Ghana Railway Development Authority to make rail transport a viable and economical alternative for container haulage from Tema Port.
