Duane “Keffe D” Davis Sentenced to 40 Years to Life for Tupac Shakur’s Murder

Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 shooting that killed American rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas.

Judge Carli Kierny imposed the sentence on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following the 63-year-old former gang leader’s conviction for first-degree murder in August. The punishment comprises consecutive terms of 20 years to life for murder and the use of a firearm.

Prosecutors argued that Davis organised the attack in retaliation for an earlier confrontation involving Shakur’s entourage and Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson.

Although Davis was not accused of firing the fatal shots, the prosecution said he supplied the weapon and helped coordinate the shooting. His accounts of the incident in interviews and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, became central to the case.

Shakur was shot near the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996, and died six days later, aged 25. The killing remained unresolved for decades before Davis’s arrest in 2023.

During sentencing, Shakur’s siblings described the enduring pain of losing their brother and urged the court to impose the maximum punishment.

Davis’s defense maintained that his public accounts exaggerated his involvement. His lawyer, Michael Sanft, indicated that the conviction would be appealed.
