The Hyundai Kona might look like a lunar rover that found its way back to Earth, but beneath its spunky sheetmetal lies a comfortable and versatile subcompact SUV. Like its exterior, the Kona’s cabin is thoroughly modern, brandishing plenty of standard tech and an easy-to-use blend of physical and digital controls.

A 147-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder serves as the Kona’s base powertrain, but if reasonable acceleration is something that you value, we’d recommend upgrading to the optional 190-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but all-wheel drive can be had on any trim as an optional extra. Rivals such as the Mazda CX-30 and Volkswagen Taos drive better, and the Chevrolet Trax has it beat from a value standpoint, but the Kona’s well-rounded disposition and unique styling make it worth a look.

Expert Tip: The Hyundai Kona’s sibling, the Kia Seltos, received a comprehensive refresh for the 2027 model year, complete with rugged new styling and a larger footprint. Not only is the Seltos less expensive in its standard, gas-only form, but it is also offered as a hybrid—unlike the Kona.

Changes to the Kona for the 2027 model year are minor. Ambient lighting is now standard on SEL Premium and Limited trims.

Car and Driver calculates your car’s value in three free and easy steps – using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

The Kona’s entry-level powertrain is an underwhelming 147-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a CVT. A livelier 190-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission is optional. All-wheel drive is available on all trims.

Compared with the first-generation Kona, this one has lost a little bit of its on-road sharpness, but with the turbo powertrain, it’s still sprightly.

In Comparison: On our test track, a Kona with the optional turbo engine and all-wheel drive hit 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. That makes it quicker than rivals such as the Volkswagen Taos and Kia Seltos with their turbocharged engines.

The EPA rates the Kona’s fuel economy as high as 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, but add all-wheel drive and the more powerful turbo engine, and those numbers drop to 24 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, the turbocharged Kona delivered 31 mpg. For more information about the Kona’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

First Row: The interior design is modern, with a cleanly styled dash fronted by a widescreen setup containing both a gauge cluster and a central infotainment touchscreen. Lower-trim Konas feature a console-mounted gear shifter, but the top two get a column-mounted stalk that frees up enough console space for a wireless charging pad and seat-heating controls. Front-seat ventilation and faux-leather upholstery are also available in top models.

Second Row: The Kona’s interior is roomy for a vehicle this size. Adults should be content sitting in either of the outboard seats.

Cargo Capacity: The cargo hold can swallow seven carry-on-size boxes behind the second row and 20 with the rear seats folded

All Konas feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen that supports wireless smartphone-mirroring tech. That screen abuts a digital gauge cluster measuring either 4.2 inches (SE and SEL Sport) or 12.3 inches (SEL Premium and Limited).

All Kona models come with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features. Owners receive not only forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights but also adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

For information about the Kona’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Hyundai’s 10-year powertrain warranty is one of the most generous policies around, as is its complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

Each year, we put hundreds of vehicles through our rigorous instrumented testing regimen. If the data in the chart below is for a different model year, that’s because this vehicle hasn’t changed from when we last tested it, and the test results remain accurate.
