Sobolo can never be champagne — Mfante Hemaa says Akufo-Addo is far better than Mahama
An elderly woman popularly known as “Mfante Hemaa” has sparked political debate after declaring that former President Nana Akufo-Addo is better than President John Dramani Mahama.
According to her, comparing the two leaders is like comparing sobolo to champagne, a statement she used to explain why she believes Akufo-Addo performed better than Mahama.
Her comments are likely to attract reactions from supporters of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), especially as Ghanaians continue to discuss the performance of the country’s political leaders.
Mfante Hemaa did not hide her preference, making it clear that she believes Akufo-Addo deserves more praise when the two former and current presidents are compared.
However, her statement represents her personal opinion, and the comparison is likely to divide public opinion, with supporters of each political party defending the records of their preferred leaders.
Akufo-Addo served as Ghana’s president from January 2017 to January 2025, before handing over power to Mahama, who returned to the presidency in January 2025 after winning the 2024 general elections.
Since assuming office, Mahama’s administration has faced public expectations to improve living conditions, create jobs and address the economic challenges confronting the country.
Meanwhile, Akufo-Addo’s eight-year administration continues to attract both praise and criticism over its policies and handling of the economy.
The comments by Mfante Hemaa have added another voice to the ongoing debate about the two leaders and their respective records in government.
Whether Ghanaians agree with her comparison or not, the statement has once again raised questions about how citizens judge presidential performance and what they expect from their leaders.
