Sammy Gyamfi’s GoldBod Appointment Has Become A Problem For Mahama’s Government—Kwadwo Banahene
Former Sekyere Central District Chief Executive Kwadwo Banahene Bediako has criticised the leadership of Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, arguing that his appointment is creating political difficulties for President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Banahene believes the controversies surrounding Gyamfi’s leadership risk undermining public confidence in the government, particularly as GoldBod remains a key initiative intended to strengthen Ghana’s gold sector, regulate small-scale mining and ensure the country derives greater economic benefits from its mineral resources.
Gyamfi, who previously served as the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), became the first chief executive of GoldBod following its establishment. However, his political background has attracted criticism from opponents who question whether he possesses the technical experience required to manage such an important institution.
According to Banahene, the concerns surrounding Gyamfi have increasingly become a political burden for the Mahama administration, with criticism of the GoldBod leadership extending to the government’s broader economic management agenda.
One of the issues highlighted in the debate involves allegations of a $214 million loss associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Gold-for-Reserves programme. The controversy has prompted calls from political critics for investigations into GoldBod’s operations and Gyamfi’s role.
Questions have also been raised about Gyamfi’s reported simultaneous positions as GoldBod chief executive and chairman of GoldBod Jewelry Limited, a subsidiary of the institution.
Gyamfi, however, has rejected claims that GoldBod incurred losses, insisting that the institution recorded surpluses and directing critics to the Auditor-General’s report for clarification. He has also threatened legal action over allegations connecting him to a separate GH¢200 million financial controversy.
Despite criticism, 16 NDC regional chairpersons have reportedly defended Gyamfi’s performance, highlighting the divisions surrounding his leadership.
Banahene argues that the government must address public concerns about GoldBod’s management to protect confidence in the institution and its objectives.
He maintains that continued controversy surrounding the board could complicate Mahama’s efforts to implement his governance and economic reform agenda.
The debate over Gyamfi’s appointment therefore remains part of a broader discussion about political appointments, professional competence and accountability in Ghana’s public institutions.
