Donyell Malen’s second-half brace looked like securing a 3-1 win for Roma, but goals from Carlos Espi, Endrick and Antonio Rudiger right at the death completed a sensational turnaround as Real took all three points.

Roma initially took the lead in the first half through Marten De Roon’s stunner, with Kylian Mbappe cancelling out that strike with a deflected long-range effort.

Roma started brightly, with Thibaut Courtois making an excellent save to deny Mario Hermoso in the fourth minute. Paulo Dybala then fired narrowly wide as the hosts put Real Madrid under early pressure.

Roma took a deserved lead in the 20th minute through De Roon, punishing Madrid’s slow start by whipping a lovely strike in from the edge of the box. Donyell Malen nearly doubled the advantage moments later, but Courtois just managed to keep his effort from crossing the line.

Mbappe levelled from range for Madrid in the 25th minute, his shot taking a deflection on its way past the goalkeeper. The equaliser gave the visitors a foothold after Roma had dominated the opening exchanges.

Roma continued to threaten on the counter, with Malen looking lively, but Madrid gradually settled and began spending more time in the hosts’ half.

Jude Bellingham came close to putting Madrid ahead just before the break, but fired Vinicius Jr’s cutback narrowly wide. The sides went in at half-time level at 1-1.

Real were stunned early in the second half when Malen scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season to put the Giallarossi 3-1 up. The former Aston Villa man latched on to a through ball before his shot deflected over Courtois to score his first, before netting his second in controversial circumstances.

Having raced through again and clinicallty finished, Real were incensed that they weren’t given a penalty for bringing down Bellingham up the other end, while Malen also looked close to being offside as he ran through.

Roma threatened to extend their lead on the counter, with Malen setting up Lorenzo Pellegrini in space, but Marc Cucurella recovered well to force the Roma captain into a poor effort wide. Teenager Rodrigo Mora also tested Courtois, although his shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

Real Madrid pushed for a way back, with Mbappe sending in a dangerous cross that Pierluigi Gollini dealt with. Endrick then used his pace to drive past Evan Ndicka and win a corner, before VAR correctly overturned a Madrid corner decision after a review.

Just when it looked like Roma may be holding on for a famous victory, Real Madrid manage to reduced the deficit in the 84th minute through Espi.

Barely a minute later Real were level through Endrick as the young Brazilian rose highest to guide a brilliant header into the back of the net.

And the drama wasn’t finished there, as another corner was met first by a Real Madrid man, this time Rudiger who was able to slam the winner in with his side foot to complete one of the classic Los Blancos comebacks in Europe.
