ROM 3-4 RMA: Match Review And Updated UEFA Champions League Table

According to a report by BBC Sport on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Real Madrid came from two goals behind to defeat AS Roma 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico in the UEFA Champions League, with Antonio Rudiger scoring a dramatic late winner to complete the comeback.

The Spanish giants secured all three points after recovering from a difficult start against a Roma side that threatened to extend their unbeaten home run. The defeat, however, left the Italian club without a victory in their last five European matches.

Roma began the encounter positively, with Matias Soule and Paulo Dybala creating early opportunities before Thibaut Courtois produced an important save to deny Mario Hermoso.

Despite losing Manu Kone to injury, the hosts took the lead in the 20th minute. Dybala won possession in midfield before Soule set up Marten de Roon, whose long-range effort took a deflection and beat Courtois.

Donyell Malen nearly doubled Roma’s advantage when his effort almost slipped underneath the Madrid goalkeeper, but the visitors responded through Kylian Mbappe. The French forward marked his 100th Champions League appearance by scoring with a deflected effort that looped over Pierluigi Gollini.

Real Madrid pushed for a second goal before the interval, but Jude Bellingham fired wide from Vinicius Junior’s cross in stoppage time. Roma regained control six minutes after the restart when a costly defensive mistake presented Malen with another opportunity.

Courtois’ pass intended for Vinicius was intercepted, allowing substitute Rodrigo Mora to release Malen, who finished from close range after the ball deflected off Federico Valverde.

The Dutch forward struck again to put Roma 3-1 ahead, finishing confidently after Soule’s through ball exposed the visitors’ defence.

Madrid briefly thought they had reduced the deficit when Mbappe scored from Yan Diomande’s pass, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The visitors continued searching for a way back and finally reduced the deficit in the 83rd minute. Carlos Espi reacted quickest to the rebound after Gollini parried Endrick’s initial header, guiding the ball into the net.

Two minutes later, Endrick equalised with a powerful header from Arda Guler’s corner, leaving Roma struggling to contain Madrid’s late pressure.

The comeback was completed when Rudiger rose to meet another dangerous corner from Guler and headed home the winning goal, turning a seemingly lost contest into a remarkable victory for the visitors.

The result gave Real Madrid their 20th victory in their last 22 Champions League matches against Italian opposition, while Roma suffered their fourth defeat in their last six European home games.
