Reactions As Mahama’s Administration Introduces A New Tax Effective Tomorrow

According to a report by UTV Ghana on October 14, 2026, the Mahama administration, through the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has announced a new 20% tax on qualifying cross-border digital services, effective October 15, 2026.

GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong announced that commercial banks will collect the tax. It is expected to affect Ghanaian users of international platforms such as Netflix, Spotify and ChatGPT, where applicable taxes are not already included in subscription prices.

The measure forms part of the Mahama administration’s wider efforts to expand the tax net and capture revenue from the growing digital economy, where foreign companies earn income from Ghanaian users without a physical presence in the country.
