Reactions As EFCC Reopens Atiku’s 20-Year-Old Corruption Case Months Before Election

According to Vanguard on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reopened its investigation into alleged financial crimes involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The development followed a petition by former House of Representatives member Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, who urged the commission to revisit its 2006 investigation.

The petition, dated August 27, 2026, was received on September 1. It was filed through his lawyer, Chief Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, SAN.

Agbonayinma visited the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, where he adopted the petition and answered questions from investigators. He urged the commission to ensure that the allegations were resolved fairly, regardless of Atiku’s political status.

He also asked the EFCC to consider a February 4, 2010, report by the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. He questioned why Atiku had not been prosecuted over the allegations and disclosed that he had petitioned US President Donald Trump.

EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale had yet to respond to enquiries about the investigation as of the time of Vanguard’s report. The allegations have not been established as proof of guilt.

The report has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians who shared different opinions. Here are some reactions:
