Raila’s Family Issues Strict Instructions to Guests Ahead of His First Anniversary in Siaya
Ida Odinga has issued a strong warning to those expected to attend the first anniversary memorial of her late husband, Raila Odinga, as preparations for the major event continue in Bondo, Siaya County.
The warning comes as Kenyans prepare to honour the former Prime Minister on Thursday, October 15, 2026, marking one year since his death.
Speaking in Siaya, Ida called on guests and political leaders to maintain peace during the commemoration. She made it clear that the event should be about remembering Raila and his contribution to Kenya rather than creating unnecessary political tension.
Ida also raised concerns about reports that some people might cause trouble during the gathering. She urged those planning to attend to respect the occasion and allow mourners to remember the late opposition leader peacefully.
Her remarks come amid growing political exchanges ahead of the memorial, with leaders from different camps expected to attend the ceremony.
Siaya Governor James Orengo has also warned politicians against bringing groups that could disrupt the event. He described the memorial as an international occasion and called on everyone attending to do so peacefully.
The main commemoration will take place at Migwena Cultural and Sports Grounds in Bondo, where thousands of mourners, political leaders, family members and other guests are expected to gather.
The anniversary programme includes an international candle-lighting ceremony at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi on Wednesday evening, October 14. Ida is expected to lead the ceremony, which will also allow Raila’s supporters outside Kenya to take part in remembering him.
Raila died in October 2025, leaving behind a long political career that shaped Kenya’s opposition politics and democratic reforms.
As the anniversary approaches, the Odinga family and event organisers are calling for unity and peaceful participation.
The key question now is whether political leaders and their supporters will respect the family’s request and keep the memorial focused on Raila’s life and legacy.
