Preliminary report points to component snagging beneath second coach, technical fault in coach 7

A preliminary joint investigation report into the Rahman Baba Express train accident in Multan has revealed key details about how the derailment occurred.

Railway sources say a part hanging beneath the second coach struck a railway crossing block and became lodged in it, while police sources have cited a technical fault in coach No. 7 and the train’s high speed as possible causes.

According to railway sources, a part of the train’s truss bar or hanger, located beneath the second coach, struck a block at a railway crossing and became stuck. The component reportedly snagged at the crossing as the train passed, leading to a wheel climbing onto the track and causing the derailment.

Railway officials said the engine and luggage van had crossed the point safely before the accident occurred. The train had departed at 5am with a total load of 672 tons.

Railway sources reported that 14 coaches derailed in the accident. Meanwhile, police sources said nine to 10 coaches overturned, while the engine continued ahead.

The preliminary findings also indicate that the remaining part of the truss bar or hanger was recovered from the accident site. Other components were also found lodged in the railway crossing, according to railway sources.

A separate account of the preliminary investigation stated that the accident occurred because of a technical fault in coach No. 7 and excessive speed. The Karachi-to-Peshawar-bound Rahman Baba Express derailed near Sher Shah Railway Station in Multan.

Police sources said the engine moved ahead while nine to 10 coaches overturned during the incident. However, officials stressed that the exact causes of the derailment can only be determined after the investigation is completed.

Railway authorities are assessing the damage caused to various departments following the accident. The recovery of components from the site and the examination of the affected coaches are among the details reported in the preliminary findings.

The final investigation is expected to establish how the component became lodged in the crossing and clarify the role, if any, of the reported technical fault and excessive speed in the derailment.
