PPP says governor’s rule in KP necessary to protect state

LAHORE  –  Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders have defended the decision to impose Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the difficult constitutional measure was taken in the larger interest of the country and its people, with national stability taking precedence over political considerations.

“Should we save politics or the country?” PPP leaders said, adding that employment, business activities and economic stability were impossible without law and order.

The views were expressed by PPP Secretary General Humayun Khan and Central Punjab General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza during a press conference at the party’s Peoples Secretariat in Model Town on Monday. Information Secretary Shahzad Saeed Cheema, Rana Farooq Saeed and other party leaders were also present.

Humayun Khan said he had visited Punjab to discuss organisational matters and maintained that the PPP had prioritised Pakistan and its people over political interests. He said the party had supported difficult and unpopular constitutional decisions whenever it believed the protection of the state and the public required them. Syed Hassan Murtaza said the PPP had pursued negotiations and dialogue to defuse tensions, but the situation had become increasingly complicated because of the absence of a positive response. He said the government, in coordination with security agencies, had attempted to normalise the situation before resorting to constitutional measures.

He maintained that the declaration issued under the President’s signature fulfilled constitutional requirements and that the PPP had exercised its constitutional prerogative with a heavy heart. He said the imposition of Governor’s Rule was neither a matter of pride nor happiness for the party, but claimed that alternative constitutional options had become necessary to improve the law-and-order situation in the province. Questioning the provincial government’s approach, Murtaza asked what measures should be taken to prevent a confrontation between state institutions when federal and provincial forces find themselves at odds. He also sought answers regarding public movement, the law-and-order situation and the provincial government’s policies, including its reported invitation to the Afghan government. Criticising the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), he said the party’s position would have received greater political recognition had its protests focused on public issues.
