Parliament In Uproar: “Wacha Ujinga” Chants Erupt After Some MPs Felt Offended By Ichungwah’s Words
Parliament turned into a noisy battleground as opposition-affiliated MPs drowned out National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah with chants of “Wacha ujinga” and “Use your brain.” The uproar came after he delivered remarks that many on the other side of the aisle read as a direct insult to them and to their political leader.
Ichung’wah was answering Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, who had alleged that Ndia MP George Kariuki, popularly known as GK, was busy campaigning for the deputy presidency. The Majority Leader brushed off the claim. “There is nothing wrong with that. Absolutely nothing wrong,” he told the House. “Every person here has an ambition to be something, including the Honourable GK.”
Then came the sting. “It is only wrong when members of Parliament who are elected by their people abandon their heads, their brains, and follow another man who cannot be anything and who cannot take them anywhere,” Ichung’wah declared. “That is the most disastrous thing that can happen, Honourable Speaker.” He added that he was naming no names unless someone felt guilty.
Although he never uttered the name, his words were widely understood to be aimed at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Ichung’wah has previously maintained that Gachagua is barred from holding public office because of his impeachment, a position that his opponents strongly dispute. The pointed remarks clearly landed, because heckling erupted from a section of the opposition benches.
As the chants swelled, Ichung’wah pressed on and tried to recount an episode involving Starehe constituency. The noise soon swallowed his words, leaving the story unfinished and the chamber in disarray.
The clash shows how bitter the political atmosphere has become as the 2027 General Election draws near. With the rift between President William Ruto and Gachagua still shaping the contest for the Mt Kenya vote, even a routine exchange on the floor of the House can now set off a fierce political storm.
