NPP Man Pleads With Mahama to Free Wontumi, Insists Prison Time Has Taught Him Enough
A member of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Ofori Attah, has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to grant a presidential pardon to the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, arguing that time spent in prison has taught him lessons that no political office ever could.
In a statement that has stirred conversation within political circles, Ofori Attah said he believes the embattled regional chairman has endured enough punishment and deserves another chance at freedom. He noted that prison has a way of reshaping a person’s outlook, and he is convinced Wontumi has emerged from the experience a changed man.
Ofori Attah explained that his appeal is not about party loyalty but about compassion and the belief that correction, not endless punishment, should guide justice. He said Wontumi’s detention has already sent a strong signal, and keeping him behind bars any longer would serve no useful purpose.
He urged President Mahama to look beyond partisan considerations and act in the spirit of reconciliation, reminding the president that mercy is one of the most powerful tools available to a leader. According to him, granting the pardon would demonstrate statesmanship and ease tensions that have been building around the case.
The appeal has drawn mixed reactions. Some within the NPP see it as a welcome gesture that could unite the party’s rank and file, while others question whether a pardon so soon would undermine the seriousness of the offence and the institutions that handled the matter.
Ofori Attah insisted that his plea should not be read as disrespect for the law or the courts. He said he fully respects the judicial process but believes the time has come for magnanimity to take over from punishment. He concluded by expressing hope that President Mahama would consider the request favourably, adding that a second chance for Wontumi could mark a turning point not only for the man himself but for the tone of the country’s politics.
