The NPA has welcomed alleged kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s decision to abandon his bail application in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court, where he is facing charges relating to an alleged fraudulent lease agreement for a luxury property in Waterkloof Heights, worth R 95 000 a month.

Matlala is also accused of using a forged Eswatini identity document and faces an additional charge of contravening the Identification Act.

His three co-accused are out on R20, 000 bail while the state is opposing his release on bail.

His lawyer told the court Matlala would, for now, focus on his trial in the Johannesburg High Court where he and four co-accused are on trial for charges relating to three alleged attempted murder incidents between 2022 and 2024.

The NPA’s Lumka Mahanjana said that Matlala will now rejoin his co-accused in the dock later this month.

“During his appearance, he abandoned his bail application. So the matter was then postponed to the 29th of October, when he’s going to join his other three co-accused. As the state, we intended to oppose his bail application. We indicated that at his first appearance. So now, as the state, we can continue and focus on further investigations.”
