“Nigeria Is Finished” — Ex-Super Eagles Star Emenike Slams Governors Over Alleged Embezzlement
According to a report by The Punch on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike has criticised some Nigerian state governors over alleged mismanagement of public funds, declaring that the country has become a ground for embezzlement.
Emenike expressed his frustration in a post on his Instagram page on Wednesday, October 14, accusing some governors of lacking clear plans for the future development of their states.
The former international also questioned the conduct of security personnel who, according to him, continue to support political office holders despite facing economic hardship.
He expressed concern that some governors allegedly prioritise the misappropriation of public funds instead of addressing the needs of their people.
“The arrogancy and confidence in some of these governors make me sick, and a lot of them don’t have good plans for the future of their state zero plans; e.g., just embezzle money, and una police and army go still follow them with empty stomachs, jokers,” Emenike wrote.
He further lamented the state of the country, saying, “Nigeria is finished and gone. We thought it was a country when we played, not knowing that it is an embezzlement ground. Embezzlement group of companies.”
Emenike, however, did not mention any governor by name in his post.
The former striker represented Nigeria between 2011 and 2015, making 37 appearances for the national team and scoring nine goals before retiring from international football in October 2015.
He remains one of the notable members of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
During the tournament, Emenike scored four goals to finish as joint top scorer and earned a place in the team of the tournament.
Nigeria secured the title after defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final, claiming the country’s third AFCON championship.
