Nigeria adds $3.73bn to FX reserves in 3 days

Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have climbed to a near-18-year high, strengthening the country’s headline external liquidity position but shifting attention to the sources, quality and sustainability of the accumulation as the government seeks to consolidate foreign exchange market stability.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that gross external reserves rose to $58.81 billion on October 12, 2026, from $55.08 billion on October 9, bringing the country close to the approximately $58.91 billion recorded on November 19, 2008.

The latest increase of $3.73 billion in three days stands out against the more gradual accumulation recorded in September, when reserves rose from $53.90 billion on September 1 to $54.93 billion at the end of the month.

From September 1 to October 12, reserves increased by $4.91 billion, representing growth of approximately 9.1 percent over the period.

Nigeria’s reserves have followed an upward trajectory in recent months. The stock increased to $54.61 billion as of September 14, 2026, before advancing further through the end of September and into October.

Nigeria’s net foreign reserves have been reported at $46 billion, with CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso linking improvements in the external position and foreign exchange market stability to stronger investor confidence.

The reserve milestone comes as the CBN continues to recalibrate monetary policy in response to changing inflationary and economic conditions.

At its September 2026 Monetary Policy Committee meeting, the central bank cut the Monetary Policy Rate by 350 basis points, from 26.5 percent to 23 percent, while adjusting the asymmetric corridor around the policy rate to plus 50 and minus 300 basis points.

The policy adjustment signals a development in monetary conditions, although the implications for the naira, capital flows and inflation will depend on a range of factors beyond the reserve balance.

A stronger external position can support confidence by improving perceptions of a country’s capacity to meet foreign currency obligations. But exchange-rate stability also depends on the availability of foreign exchange from export earnings and other inflows, the level of import demand, capital movements and the credibility of the foreign exchange market framework.

The reserve gains also coincide with a more favourable economic growth outlook. The World Bank raised its forecast for Nigeria’s economic growth in 2026 to 4.3 percent, from 4.0 percent in 2025, and projected growth of 4.4 percent in both 2027 and 2028.

Stronger growth could support foreign exchange generation through higher economic activity and export capacity, provided the expansion is accompanied by improvements in productivity, investment and the performance of foreign-exchange-earning sectors.

Nevertheless, the sustainability of Nigeria’s external position remains sensitive to oil receipts, global commodity prices, capital flows and the country’s demand for imported goods and services. Changes in these variables can influence both the accumulation and deployment of foreign exchange reserves.
