Manchester City Lose to PSG as Erling Haaland Makes Champions League History
According to a report by the Evening Standard on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Manchester City suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in their UEFA Champions League clash at the Etihad Stadium, despite Erling Haaland setting a new club record as the team’s all-time leading goalscorer in the competition.
The encounter also marked Pep Guardiola’s first return to the Etihad since leaving his managerial role last summer. The former Manchester City manager watched the match from the directors’ box, where supporters welcomed him back with a show of appreciation amid the club’s ongoing financial misconduct case.
Manchester City went into the game on the back of eight consecutive victories under new manager Enzo Maresca. However, PSG delivered an impressive first-half performance that left the hosts struggling to cope with their attacking threat.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Desire Doue cut inside from the left before beating Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post. Just two minutes later, Ousmane Dembele doubled PSG’s lead after exchanging passes with Doue and heading in the return ball.
PSG continued to dominate, with Achraf Hakimi hitting the post with a header as the visitors threatened to extend their advantage. Their third goal arrived in the 32nd minute when Vitinha converted a lay-off from Warren Zaire-Emery, leaving Manchester City with a three-goal deficit at half-time.
Maresca responded by making three substitutions during the interval, and his changes quickly improved City’s performance. Iliman Ndiaye delivered a cross that Haaland headed into the net, reducing the deficit and giving the home side renewed hope of mounting a comeback.
However, PSG restored their three-goal advantage when Maghnes Akliouche unleashed a long-range effort that slipped past Donnarumma after the goalkeeper appeared to have made the save.
Manchester City refused to give up, with Enzo Fernandez and Haaland hitting the woodwork in quick succession as the hosts continued their search for another goal. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 75th minute when Haaland converted a pass from Ayyoub Bouaddi to score his second goal of the night.
The Norwegian striker’s brace took his Champions League tally for Manchester City to 38 goals in 41 appearances, establishing him as the club’s highest goalscorer in the competition.
Haaland subsequently came close to completing his hat-trick, but PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov produced a save from close range to deny him.
Despite Manchester City’s continued efforts to reduce the deficit, PSG maintained their advantage and secured an impressive 4-2 victory. The French side also missed an opportunity to add another goal late in the match when Donnarumma saved Ferran Torres’ stoppage-time penalty.
