Man City and PSG Took Different Paths After Financial Breaches
According to a report by Daily Mail on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have both faced scrutiny over financial regulations, but the two clubs have responded to their respective cases in very different ways.
The contrasting approaches have become particularly noticeable ahead of Manchester City’s Champions League meeting with PSG. While PSG have largely avoided publicly celebrating City’s recent punishment, the financial controversy has renewed attention on the long-standing rivalry between the two clubs and their Gulf-based owners.
Both clubs have previously been investigated over sponsorship arrangements that UEFA considered problematic. PSG accepted financial restrictions and a fine, while Manchester City’s relationship with football authorities became far more confrontational as the club challenged the allegations against it.
The report highlighted the contrasting strategies adopted by the two sides. PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi gradually increased his influence within European football and later became a leading figure in the organisation representing European clubs.
Meanwhile, Manchester City pursued a prolonged legal battle over the allegations. The club’s approach was described as significantly more aggressive, with City maintaining that it had been unfairly targeted.
The rivalry between Qatar and Abu Dhabi has also added another dimension to the relationship between PSG and City. Qatar became involved with PSG in 2011, while Abu Dhabi’s ownership of Manchester City began in 2008.
City eventually achieved Champions League glory in 2023, beating Inter Milan in the final. PSG later established themselves among Europe’s strongest teams and have continued to compete at the highest level.
Despite the financial controversies surrounding both clubs, PSG have refrained from openly celebrating City’s difficulties. Their shared history means the French champions are aware that they have also faced criticism over their own financial practices.
The latest developments have therefore added another chapter to the complicated rivalry between the two Gulf-backed clubs as they prepare to meet in the Champions League.
