Mahama, Life Is Too Hard, I Am Dying – Old Ghanaian Woman Cries Out In Pain

Life is hard under President Mahama, I am dying. I cannot eat. I cannot buy medicine.”

Those were the heartbreaking words of an old Ghanaian woman in a video that has touched many hearts. She was not shouting slogans. She was not doing politics. She was crying because life has become too hard for her to bear.

The woman, who looks to be in her 70s, said she wakes up every day with no hope. Food prices are high. The little money she gets from selling small items cannot even buy one decent meal. She says she is dying slowly, not from sickness, but from hardship.

Go to any market in Ghana today. In Accra, in Kumasi, in Tamale, in Takoradi, the story is the same. A bowl of gari that used to be 10 cedis is now more than double. A bottle of cooking oil is now like gold. Rice, beans, plantain, everything has gone up. But incomes have not gone up. People are earning the same or even less, while spending more every day.

Our mothers who sell in the market sit from morning till evening with no customers because buyers have no money. Our fathers who work as drivers, masons, and carpenters say there is no job. Our young people have finished school but are sitting at home with no work. They say they are tired.

What hurts most is that the old woman is not asking for luxury. She is not asking for a big house or a car. She is asking for food to eat. She is asking for money to buy paracetamol. She is asking for a little respect in her old age. When a country cannot give its old people this small dignity, then we have failed.

Mr. President, this cry is not from one woman. It is the cry of thousands of Ghanaian mothers and grandmothers who are suffering in silence in villages and towns. They voted with hope. They believed life would get better. Today, they are saying life is getting worse.

Leadership is about listening to the cry of the people. The old woman has spoken. She says she is dying. The time to act is now, before her cry becomes the cry of the whole nation.
