Just Hours After Gachagua Predicted a Fuel Price Increase, EPRA Surprises Kenyans With This Update
Kenyan motorists and households are facing another rise in the cost of living after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced sharp increases in fuel prices for the October-November period.
In its latest announcement on Wednesday, October 14, EPRA raised the price of super petrol by KSh12.93 per litre, diesel by KSh9.90 and kerosene by KSh28.49.
Under the new prices, a litre of super petrol will retail at KSh226.96 in Nairobi, while diesel will cost KSh227.76. Kerosene will retail at KSh219.87 per litre, according to the announcement reported on Wednesday.
The new prices take effect at midnight on October 14 and will remain in force until November 14, 2026.
The increase is expected to put more pressure on Kenyans who depend on public transport and those who use fuel for their daily activities. Higher diesel prices could also affect the cost of transporting food and other goods from farms and factories to markets.
For households that rely on kerosene for cooking and lighting, the latest increase is likely to create additional challenges as families try to manage their daily expenses.
The announcement comes at a time when Kenyans are already concerned about the rising cost of essential goods and services. Any increase in transport and production costs can affect the prices consumers pay in shops and markets.
According to EPRA, the changes are linked to higher international petroleum import costs, with disruptions to supply chains adding pressure to the market. Kenya imports its petroleum requirements in refined form, leaving local prices exposed to changes in the global market. <Cite refs={[“turn234485view1″,”turn309746search3”]}/>
The regulator’s announcement is likely to renew public debate over fuel costs and their effect on ordinary Kenyans. Motorists, transport operators, traders and households will now have to adjust their budgets to the new rates.
The new prices apply across the country, although the maximum allowed retail prices differ by town because of transportation costs and other pricing factors.
As Kenyans begin adjusting to the latest changes, attention will turn to how the increase affects public transport fares and the prices of basic commodities in the coming weeks.
Do you think the government should take additional measures to ease the burden of rising fuel prices on Kenyan households?
