IGR Of Lagos State Is IGR Of 31 States Put Together, Now, 90% Of That IGR Is Taxes From People- Funsho Doherty
Funsho Doherty, the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate for Lagos State, has said that between 80 and 90 per cent of the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) comes from taxes paid by residents, stressing the contribution of the people to the state’s revenue.
Doherty made this known during an interview on Nevon HQ on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, while discussing Lagos State’s revenue profile and the role of taxation in generating funds for the government.
According to the NDC candidate, Lagos generates revenue comparable to the combined IGR of about 31 other states in Nigeria, based on the latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). He noted that a significant proportion of the revenue comes directly from taxes collected from individuals and businesses.
“The IGR of Lagos State is the IGR of about 31 states put together according to the latest Nigerian Bureau of Statistics report. Now, 80 to 90% of that IGR is taxes taken from the people,” he said.
His remarks come amid renewed discussions about the revenue generated by Lagos State and how the government utilises public funds to provide essential services to residents.
The NBS report on state-level internally generated revenue for 2025 showed that Lagos generated approximately N1.77 trillion, the highest among the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Tax revenue accounted for about N1.48 trillion of the amount, while revenue from ministries, departments and agencies contributed approximately N292.64 billion.
