GRA Recovers GH¢1.3 Billion of GH¢1.4 Billion Unpaid VAT from ECG – Anthony Sarpong

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has successfully recovered GH¢1.3 billion out of an estimated GH¢1.4 billion in unpaid Value Added Tax (VAT) owed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The disclosure was made by Anthony Sarpong, who provided details on the progress of the authority’s efforts to retrieve the outstanding debt.

According to him, the recovery follows sustained enforcement and engagement with the power distribution company over its tax obligations. He explained that the GRA identified the substantial VAT arrears during its routine audit and compliance checks, prompting immediate action to recover what was owed to the state.

Anthony Sarpong noted that out of the total amount of about GH¢1.4 billion, GH¢1.3 billion has so far been retrieved, leaving a relatively small balance still outstanding. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made, describing the recovery as a significant boost to government revenue at a time when the country needs every cedi to support national development.

He emphasised that the GRA remains committed to ensuring that all institutions, regardless of their size or importance, comply fully with their tax obligations. He added that no entity is exempt from paying the taxes it owes, since these funds are essential for funding public services such as roads, healthcare, and education.

The GRA official also urged other organisations with outstanding tax liabilities to settle them promptly to avoid enforcement measures, which could include penalties and further legal action.

He reassured the public that the authority will continue to strengthen its monitoring and collection systems to close revenue leakages and improve compliance across all sectors.

The recovery of GH¢1.3 billion from ECG underscores the GRA’s renewed determination to mobilise domestic revenue effectively, ensuring that state institutions and businesses alike contribute their fair share to the nation’s growth and development.
