Good News For Cocoa Farmers – COCOBOD Raises GH¢3.3 Billion To Buy Your Cocoa This Season

CEO of COCOBOD, Dr. Randy Abbey, has announced good news for cocoa farmers in Ghana.

He says the GHS3.3 billion raised from the maiden commercial paper issuance will provide working-capital support for cocoa purchases during the 2026/27 crop season.

This means COCOBOD now has money ready to buy cocoa from farmers without delay.

In the past, COCOBOD used to borrow money from outside Ghana to buy cocoa. That was expensive and difficult.

Now, things have changed. Ghana Cocoa Board has raised GH¢3.396 billion from domestic institutional investors through the maiden commercial paper issuance of Cocoa Capital PLC, as the Board moves to reduce its reliance on external borrowing to finance cocoa purchases.

This is part of a big GH¢16.3 billion programme. The programme comprises GH¢14 billion in commercial paper to finance cocoa purchases and GH¢2.3 billion in bonds intended to refinance existing cocoa-sector debt.

The first issuance raised about GH¢3.39 billion, equivalent to approximately US$288 million, through a short-term domestic debt issuance to support cocoa purchases from farmers during the 2026/2027 crop season.

Dr. Randy Abbey said this money is strictly for buying cocoa. It will not be used to pay old debts.

It is working capital. It means when the farmer harvests his cocoa, COCOBOD will have money to pay him quickly.

For the 2026/27 season, farmers should not worry about whether their cocoa will be bought. The money is there.

This is a new way of funding cocoa in Ghana – using Ghanaian money to buy Ghanaian cocoa, for Ghanaian farmers.
