Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has issued a strong warning to public sector workers and state officials, reminding them that public funds belong exclusively to the citizenry and must be managed with absolute transparency and prudence.

Addressing stakeholders on public financial management, Dr. Ato Forson urged officeholders to account for every single cedi entrusted to their care. He emphasized that public office is a position of trust, stressing that financial management systems across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must be significantly strengthened to plug loopholes, prevent waste, and eliminate systemic malfeasance.

According to the Finance Minister, the recurring cycle where the state is forced to embark on aggressive asset recovery campaigns should no longer be treated as a standard practice. Instead, he called for robust institutional mechanisms that make the recovery of misappropriated public funds a rare exception rather than an annual ritual.

“Let us build systems where recovery becomes the exception, not an annual ritual,” Dr. Ato Forson stated.

His remarks reinforce the government’s broader agenda to enforce fiscal discipline, improve public expenditure tracking, and ensure that state resources directly benefit national development rather than serving private interests.
