Church Member and Former MTN Staff Dies by Suicide After Long Battle With Depression
Bright Gyan Koomson, a former staff member of telecommunications giant MTN and a devoted member of the Wesley Methodist Cathedral, has reportedly died by suicide after years of struggling with depression and addiction.
News of his death emerged over the weekend, sending shockwaves through his church community, former colleagues, and friends. According to close associates, Koomson had been battling depression for several years, a condition that worsened after he developed an addiction that affected his finances and relationships. Despite efforts by family and church members to support him, his condition reportedly deteriorated in recent months.
Sources say he had withdrawn from social activities and stopped attending some church programmes, which worried those who knew him closely. A few days before his death, he was said to have appeared unusually calm, a change that some now interpret as a sign that he had made a decision about his life.
The leadership of the Wesley Methodist Cathedral has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing him as a friendly and dedicated member who contributed to the church in various ways. Church officials urged members to be compassionate toward those struggling with mental health challenges and to create a safe space for people to seek help without stigma.
Former MTN colleagues also took to social media to mourn him, recalling his professionalism and warm personality during his time with the company. Many expressed regret that he did not receive the sustained professional help he needed.
Mental health advocates used the tragedy to renew calls for greater awareness and accessible counselling services in Ghana. They noted that depression and addiction remain widely misunderstood, causing many sufferers to hide their pain until it is too late.
Koomson’s death is the latest in a series of cases highlighting the growing mental health crisis in the country. He is expected to be buried following arrangements by his family in consultation with the church.
