Barcelona Tell Chelsea Asking Price For Dream Enzo Fernandez Replacement
Chelsea have been told that they may need to pay at least £50 million to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as they consider a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, Barcelona are prepared to consider De Jong’s departure if they receive an offer worth around £50 million, equivalent to approximately €59.2 million.
The 29-year-old has emerged as a target for Chelsea ahead of the January transfer window, with manager Xabi Alonso’s side looking to strengthen their midfield following Fernandez’s move to Manchester City last summer.
Chelsea are understood to view the Netherlands international as a potential successor to Fernandez and could consider making an offer when the transfer window reopens.
However, Barcelona’s valuation is considerably higher than De Jong’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), which stands at €38.2 million, according to FootballTransfers. His current ETV range is between €34.3 million and €42 million.
Barcelona are also in a position to negotiate from strength, with De Jong under contract until 2029 after agreeing to revised terms in October 2025.
The Catalan club signed the midfielder from Ajax in 2019 in a deal worth approximately €86 million, including bonuses. A sale at the reported asking price would therefore represent a significant loss on their original investment.
De Jong’s situation at Barcelona could nevertheless influence Chelsea’s pursuit. The midfielder has yet to feature in an official match this season but has resumed group training after recovering from an injury.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is hoping to have him available again soon, although the Dutchman may face competition for a starting position from Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo and FermÃn López.
The competition for places has also seen Barcelona experiment with De Jong in central defence during training, potentially offering another route into the team.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are monitoring developments as they assess their midfield options under Alonso. The club were unable to secure an immediate replacement for Fernandez before the summer transfer window closed.
