ANC Gauteng condemns “barbaric” Katlehong attack

Ask AI 1minThe scene in Katlehong on Tuesday night after a drive-by shooting claimed four lives.

The ANC in Gauteng has reacted strongly to the killings of four young people in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni on Tuesday night, saying the shooting was “barbaric, unacceptable and an assault on the aspirations of young people”.

Among those killed, as mourners gathered for a memorial service, was Jeannette Magugu, an ANC member who was shot and killed outside her home in Katlehong. Calling the murders a senseless act of violence, the party said: “No disagreement, conflict or grievance can ever justify the taking of innocent lives.”

ANCYL provincial secretary Mpume Sangweni said the continued killing of young people was “an intolerable tragedy”.

ANC Ekurhuleni Acting Regional Secretary Mipane Mhlongo said a comprehensive, unbiased investigation was necessary because the incident took place during a crucial period leading up to the local government elections. The party wanted the police and political killings task team to establish the motive behind the killings.

“Without pre-empting the outcome of the investigation, no possibility should be excluded. Anyone found to have planned, facilitated or carried out these killings must be brought to justice without fear, favour or prejudice,” said Mhlongo.

The ANC has also called on the public to refrain from sharing and distributing graphic pictures and videos of the dead and injured from the shootings on social media. The party said sharing such material violates the dignity of the dead, while adding to the trauma experienced by their families and loved ones.
