Akosua Puni Essien – The First Ghanaian Woman To Own A European Football Club

Many people know Michael Essien, the football star who played for clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, but not many people know that behind the scenes stands a strong, intelligent, and ambitious woman Akosua Puni Essien.

You may know her simply as Michael Essien’s wife, but Akosua Puni is much more than that. She is a businesswoman, philanthropist, consultant, and football administrator who has quietly built her own legacy both in Ghana and internationally.

Born and raised in Ghana, Akosua Puni pursued higher education in the United Kingdom and later graduated from the University of Leeds. Before becoming widely known publicly, she reportedly worked closely with Michael Essien as his publicist, helping manage aspects of his image and professional brand.

In 2013, she married Ghana football legend Michael Essien, and together they built a family blessed with children. However, she did not choose to remain only in the background as the wife of a football icon. Instead, she entered the world of football business in a way that shocked many people across Europe and Africa.

In 2017, Akosua Puni made history after purchasing the struggling Italian football club Como FC at an auction for about €237,000. That bold move made her the first Ghanaian woman to own a European football club a major achievement that placed Ghana on the international football business map.

Although the club later faced financial difficulties and ownership changes before its recent rise, her decision remains one of the boldest moves by any Ghanaian woman in international sports administration.

Aside from football, Akosua Puni has also played a major role in charity work through the Michael Essien Foundation, supporting health programs and community development projects aimed at improving lives.

Her story reminds us that behind many successful men are strong women with dreams, ambition, and achievements of their own.
