AKA and celebrity chef, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were gunned down outside The Wish on Florida restaurant on 10 February 2023.

On that fateful day, AKA flew down to Durban with his team: Siya Mdluli (road manager), Tshediso Mokoko (DJ) and Kutlwano Mogotsi (photographer). They met their driver, Simphiwe Ngidi and the bodyguard at King Shaka International Airport in Durban.

According to witnesses, who have testified at the trial in the Durban High Court, a bodyguard was hired to guard AKA from his arrival at the airport, to the hotel and to the show.

During their testimony, the state repeatedly asked witnesses about the bodyguard’s whereabouts during the shooting.

The driver testified that the bodyguard ran to hide with them during the shooting, while two witnesses from AKA’s team said they didn’t know where the bodyguard was.

On Wednesday, 14 October, AKA’s road manager, Siya was asked by the state where the bodyguard was during the shooting, to which he said he had no idea.

“I last saw the bodyguard before the shooting and after that I never saw that bodyguard again,” he said.

AKA’s DJ Tshediso testified on Tuesday, 13 October. The state also asked him about the bodyguard’s whereabouts.

“I didn’t see the bodyguard during the shooting,” he said.

Simphiwe told the court on Tuesday they ran away to hide during the shooting and when they checked for injuries afterwards, the bodyguard was there with them in hiding – without AKA.

“The bodyguard was there with us. That’s why the question was raised: ‘Where’s Kiernan?’ We proceeded outside to check what happened and that’s when I saw that Tibz was injured and Kiernan was on the ground,” he said.
