10 things couples should agree on before having children
Having a child can change almost every aspect of a couple’s life, from finances and sleep to career plans and family relationships. Love is important, but couples also need to discuss the practical responsibilities of raising a child before taking that step.
1. Whether they are both ready for children
One partner may feel ready while the other still wants time to establish a career, save money or enjoy life as a couple. Both should be honest about their expectations.
2. How they will handle the financial costs
From antenatal care and delivery to feeding, clothing, childcare and school fees, raising a child requires planning. Couples should discuss how they will share these expenses.
A couple living in a single room or sharing a home with relatives may need to consider whether their current arrangement will provide enough space and privacy for a child.
Feeding, bathing, changing nappies, school runs and night-time care should not automatically become one person’s responsibility. Couples need to agree on how they will share the work.
5. Whether one person will take a career break
Childcare may affect work schedules, business plans and career progression. Couples should discuss whether either person expects to reduce working hours or stay home with the child.
Grandparents and other relatives can provide valuable support, but couples should discuss boundaries around childcare, discipline and decisions affecting their child.
7. How they will discipline their children
Parents may have different views on punishment, rules, screen time and acceptable behaviour. Discussing these differences early can help prevent disagreements later.
8. How they will handle religious and cultural expectations
Naming ceremonies, religious upbringing, traditional practices and family expectations can become sources of disagreement if couples have never discussed them.
9. How they will protect their relationship
A new baby can leave parents exhausted and with little time for each other. Couples should recognise that maintaining their relationship will require communication, patience and shared effort.
Job loss, unexpected medical expenses, a difficult birth or changes in family support can affect parenting plans. Couples should discuss how they would respond to unexpected challenges rather than assuming everything will go as planned.
