“Your Houses Were Built on a Dam, Yet You Hold a Microphone in Public to Lament” — Mussa Dankwah
Global InfoAnalytics Chief Executive Officer Mussa Dankwah has sparked online debate after criticising people who allegedly build houses on waterways or dams and later complain about flooding.
In a Facebook post, Dankwah questioned the sincerity of individuals who construct homes in areas vulnerable to flooding but publicly condemn the problem when heavy rainfall affects their properties.
He stated: “Your houses were built on a dam, yet you hold microphone in public to lament about houses in waterways. What kind of dishonesty is that?”
While he did not explicitly identify Dennis Miracles Aboagye in the post, some social media users linked the comments to reports that the politician had been affected by recent floods.
Aboagye reportedly said that rising floodwater reached his neck during the downpour. According to media reports, he was subsequently evacuated from the affected location and taken to Akwapem Akropong, his hometown, for safety.
The post has divided opinion on social media. Supporters of Dankwah’s position argue that individuals, particularly public figures, should avoid building in flood-prone areas and comply with planning regulations. Others believe the criticism was too harsh, maintaining that flooding can affect anyone.
The debate has once again highlighted Ghana’s persistent challenges with construction on waterways, poor urban planning and inadequate enforcement of building regulations. Heavy rains continue to expose communities to flooding, property destruction, displacement and loss of life.
Calls are therefore growing for authorities to strengthen enforcement of planning laws and take preventive measures to minimise flooding across the country.
