A woman has been killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the M4 Ruth First Highway in Durban North.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson says emergency crews arrived to find one vehicle engulfed in flames and three others extensively damaged.

“Immediately, more ambulances as well as advanced life support paramedics, together with the eThekwini Fire Department and Metro Police and SAPS Search and Rescue were dispatched to assist. The eThekwini Fire Department arrived rapidly and extinguished the blaze.

“Unfortunately, paramedics found one female believed to be in her 40s, who had sustained fatal injuries in one of the vehicles involved.”

Several injured people were treated on scene before being transported to hospital.

“The southbound carriageway remains closed while SAPS concludes the investigation. However, the northbound carriageway is trickling past the accident scene. I'd advise motorists to avoid this area at all costs. At this stage, the events leading up to this crash is unknown. However, SAPS will be investigating further.”

Meanwhile, motorists using the M27 on the KZN north coast have been advised to plan ahead, as a temporary road closure is scheduled for Tuesday while upgrades to the route continue between Umdloti and the N2 interchange.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya, KZN Transport Department spokesperson, says the M27 will be closed on Tuesday between 9am and 3pm to allow construction teams to install large concrete beams over a bridge.

He says the work forms part of a major project to upgrade the road into a dual carriageway.

“These extensive upgrades are necessary and they are being executed on the existing infrastructure, and [MEC Siboniso Duma] has prioritised the safety of members of the public and motorists in particular, because we need to accommodate the placing of big concrete beams.

“So, the MEC has apologised to motorists and members of the public for this short inconvenience.”
