Communications company Openreach is to lay new ducts for cables at the junction of Bridge Street, Bank Street, Castle Road, and Ness Bridge.

The work in the city centre is scheduled to run from Friday to Tuesday.

The council said there would be "extensive" traffic management in place, and motorists should use alternative routes if possible.

The junction has more than 29,200 traffic movements between 07:00 and 19:00 daily – 55% of them involving cars – according to Highland Council figures.

From 06:00 on Friday to Sunday, work is planned from Johnny Foxes pub to Zizzi restaurant, and traffic will be controlled by a four-way lights system.

The eastbound lane on Bridge Street and the southbound lanes on Bank Street will be closed. Traffic will be directed around the area using the westbound lane of Bridge Street and the northbound lane on Bank Street.

One lane eastbound will be closed on Ness Bridge.

On Monday the work area is planned to move next to a bus stop on Castle Road. Traffic will be controlled by four-way lights.

The westbound lanes of Bridge Street will be closed and traffic will be directed around using the eastbound lane.

The southbound lane of Castle Road will also be closed and traffic will be diverted using the northbound lane.

A single lane will be closed on the southbound side of Bank Street and the eastbound lane on Ness Bridge.

On Tuesday, the work will be moved to the junction of View Place and Castle Road with a three-way traffic light system in place.

A number of pedestrian crossing points will be suspended and replaced temporary ones.

Highland Council said: "Warning signs will go out this week advising motorist that delays will be likely and to use alternative routes if possible."
