Football fans across the globe tuned in to watch the first Manchester City match since the charges verdict.
Many were curious to see what kind of effect the seismic story would have on the City players. It turns out that it didn’t really have too much of an impact. That said, Liverpool seeing Ryan Gravenberch sent off did not help their cause.
But it was a professional showing from the City players, who were fantastically supported by the travelling fans, who had brought along inflatable bananas in a show of defiance.
Tomorrow night City host Paris Saint-Germain, with Pep Guardiola set to attend the game to show his support, and here’s an XI that would be capable of picking up three points.
In goal, Gianluigi Donnarumma is sure to continue and there may just be one change in front of him from the weekend.
Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi should all keep their places, but on the left maybe Josko Gvardiol will rotate in for Nico O’Reilly to freshen things up.
In midfield, Elliot Anderson will surely start after another top performance against Liverpool. Enzo Fernandez and Rayan Cherki should complete the midfield.
On the wings, Maresca could go with Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku. Doku made his first appearance of the season on Sunday as he came off the bench against Liverpool, and instantly made his mark by scoring City’s second goal. It was a remarkable finish, and one that makes him deserving of a start at Iliman Ndiaye’s expense.
And then, through the middle, Erling Haaland will hope to keep up his ridiculous rate of scoring in this competition.
He currently has 59 goals in 60 games and is tied with Andriy Shevchenko. A goal against PSG will see him go level with Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Man City XI to face PSG (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma/Nunes, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol/Anderson, Fernandez/Semenyo, Cherki, Doku, Haaland.
It was reported last week that Pep Guardiola will be in attendance at the Etihad Stadium to show his support for the club as it fights to clear its name after the charges verdict.
Guardiola put out a statement on social media shortly after the verdict dropped, telling fans that he is with them. He said: “I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever. I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players, staff, Enzo and you, our unique supporters.

Maresca referred to the Etihad as ‘still his house’, and supporters who are feeling a lot right now will no doubt be grateful to see the Spaniard. It is unclear if he plans to speak with any of the players.
