The Day Mahama Resumed Office, I Immediately Knew He Was About To Do Something Serious —Agyepong

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has triggered fresh political discussions after acknowledging what he considers positive aspects of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Agyepong said political differences should not prevent people from recognising good leadership. He insisted that the interests of Ghana must remain the priority and that citizens should assess government performance based on results rather than party affiliation.

The NPP member specifically pointed to the renewed work of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), saying it has helped bring financial and administrative issues into the public domain since Mahama returned to power.

He said the committee has uncovered concerns relating to government contracts, public resources and financial management. Agyepong believes that exposing such matters is important because transparency allows the public to better understand how state resources are being handled.

He said he became convinced that Mahama was ready to take meaningful action when the president resumed office and strengthened the work of the Public Accounts Committee. According to him, matters that were previously not visible are now receiving public attention.

Despite his continued allegiance to the NPP, Agyepong stressed that praising an opposition government for doing something right should not be considered disloyalty. He said political leaders and citizens must be willing to acknowledge policies that contribute to accountability and better governance.

In a particularly notable comment, Agyepong said that if the government’s present performance were the only factor influencing his vote, he would back President Mahama to continue as president, stating, “Mahama toua so.”

He also spoke favourably about the government’s efforts to conduct audits, recover allegedly misused state funds and investigate financial dealings considered questionable.

Agyepong called on the NPP to learn from recent political developments and reflect on mistakes and challenges from the past. He warned that the Ghanaian electorate is increasingly expecting public officials to demonstrate transparency, accountability and responsible leadership.

He ultimately stressed that national development must take priority over party politics. In his view, both the ruling government and opposition should be held to equal standards of integrity, accountability and good governance.
