PPP leader seeks details of NA’s int’l engagements, expenditure

ISLAMABAD  –  Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sehr Kamran has sought comprehensive details of the current National Assembly’s international parliamentary engagements, including overseas visits, conferences, delegations, meetings and the expenditure incurred on such activities, calling for greater transparency and equal opportunities for all members.

Exercising her Right to Information under Rule 80 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, Sehr Kamran has formally approached the Speaker of the National Assembly, seeking complete, date-wise information about international parliamentary engagements undertaken by the current Assembly.

In her request on Monday, the PPP leader sought details of all international conferences, official visits, parliamentary delegations and meetings, including their dates, venues, objectives and the names of participating members.

She also called for a comprehensive breakdown of expenditure incurred on each international engagement, covering airfare, accommodation, daily allowances and other associated costs.

The request aims to bring greater clarity to the process through which parliamentary representatives participate in international engagements and to ensure that public funds allocated for such activities are accounted for transparently.

Sehr Kamran has also sought information about the criteria and procedures adopted for selecting members of the National Assembly for international visits, conferences and delegations.

In particular, she has asked whether seniority, previous parliamentary experience, relevant expertise and membership of parliamentary committees are taken into consideration when determining participation in such engagements.

The PPP leader sought details of the measures in place to ensure fairness, transparency and equal opportunities for all members of the National Assembly, raising the broader question of how participation in international parliamentary activities is allocated among elected representatives.

Emphasising the importance of accountability in parliamentary affairs, Sehr Kamran maintained that transparency and equal opportunity were essential to strengthening parliamentary democracy and enhancing public trust in democratic institutions.

Her initiative places the spotlight on the need for clear and consistent procedures governing international parliamentary representation, including the selection of members, the objectives of official engagements and the utilisation of public resources.

International parliamentary conferences and delegations provide elected representatives with opportunities to exchange legislative experiences, engage with counterparts from other countries and contribute to discussions on regional and global issues. Transparent selection procedures can help ensure that such opportunities are allocated fairly and serve the broader institutional interests of Parliament.

The information sought by Sehr Kamran is also intended to clarify the standards applied in selecting lawmakers for overseas engagements and the mechanisms used to account for the expenditure associated with these activities.

The PPP leader’s request underscores the significance of access to information as an instrument of parliamentary oversight and institutional accountability, reinforcing the principle that transparency in the use of public funds and the allocation of official opportunities is fundamental to public confidence in democratic governance.
