Oburu Oginga’s Office Gives Fresh Update on When ODM Leader Is Expected to Go Home

ODM leader Oburu Oginga is expected to return home either today or tomorrow, party secretary Catherine Omanyo has announced, providing a fresh update on the veteran politician’s health.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 13, Omanyo said Oburu was preparing to leave, stating that he was “headed home either today or tomorrow.”

The update comes amid speculation about the ODM leader’s health, with his secretariat previously assuring Kenyans that he was alive, safe and in good spirits.

In a statement issued on October 6, the office disclosed that doctors had advised him to rest and limit strenuous physical engagements but did not reveal details of his medical condition.

Omanyo also criticised social media users and bloggers circulating claims about death, arguing that the timing of a person’s passing was beyond human control.

She urged restraint over speculation about people’s mortality, maintaining that nobody should be wished dead or subjected to premature claims about their fate.

“And death that they are talking about does not choose a child or old. It comes to all of us. So we are not praying for anybody to die prematurely,” she said.

She added that the timing of death was a matter of divine will rather than a decision that could be made by social media users.

“His time will come and we will accept. Everybody’s time will come and we will accept because that is God’s choice, not the social media bloggers’ choice,” she stated.

Oburu, the elder brother of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, assumed leadership of ODM following Raila’s death in October 2025.

His leadership comes at a critical period for the party as political alliances and succession questions continue to feature in discussions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The latest update provides a tentative timeline for Oburu’s return home, although the office has not publicly disclosed further details about his medical condition.
