NFL Suspends 49ers’ Dre Greenlaw for Head-Butting Rival
The NFL suspended 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw one game without pay on Monday after he head-butted a helmetless Seattle Seahawks player during Sunday’s win, the league announced in a formal release.
The incident happened in the second quarter of San Francisco’s 32-29 victory, with the 49ers leading 14-10 at the time.
The sequence started when Greenlaw was penalized for a late hit on quarterback Sam Darnold near the Seattle sideline.
Several Seahawks defenders confronted him afterward, and Greenlaw responded by driving his helmet into the face of Ernest Jones IV, who wasn’t wearing his helmet at the time.
Jones began bleeding from the impact, and Greenlaw was ejected on the spot.
In its statement, the league said the head-butt was “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,” and NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo confirmed Greenlaw has the option to appeal, though success isn’t guaranteed.
Insider Tom Pelissero was more direct in his own reporting: “49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been suspended without pay for one game for an act of unsportsmanlike conduct during Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks,” he wrote.
Greenlaw has a well-documented history of sideline flare-ups. He’s been ejected twice before in his career, including a 2023 altercation with Philadelphia’s head of security and a helmet-to-helmet hit on Justin Herbert in 2022.
He was also suspended one game last season while playing for Denver, that time for berating an official after a win over the Giants. Even his own head coach seemed to see this one coming.
“You’re going to get baited big time when, especially when you’re on their bench,” Kyle Shanahan said after the game, referencing the chaos of the sideline confrontation.

Reaction has been mixed across NFL social media. One widely shared post from the account ParlayPlay read bluntly, “49ers fans acting surprised that the dirtiest player in the game gets suspended,” while others argued the punishment barely fits the severity of driving a helmet into an unprotected player’s face.
The suspension means Greenlaw misses San Francisco’s Week 6 matchup against Washington, a game that now carries extra weight for a 49ers defense that will need to replace his 37 tackles and physical presence in the middle of the field.
San Francisco improved to 5-0 with Sunday’s win, but how the linebacker corps performs without its most combustible piece will be one of the things worth watching closely this weekend.
